If you’re wondering why pets aren’t allowed at the farmers market, you aren’t the first to ask us. Farmers markets across Colorado have different approaches to their pet policies, and we’re here to explain ours.

Since our first market in 1987, we had seen it all: dangerous dog fights, unplanned potty breaks, and countless items grabbed off of tables by hungry canines. Simply put: it wasn’t possible to run the safe and sanitary farmers markets we wanted to offer our community while still accommodating pets at the market.

Over time, more farmers markets across the state have been implementing no pet policies. While there are many reasons behind this decision, many cite hot temperatures. Asphalt can reach 130°F when the outdoor air temperature reaches 85°F. This can cause damage to dogs’ paws, and lead to pain and discomfort.

As a nonprofit organization, our mission is to build a thriving food system that uplifts agricultural producers. That means our priority is always to provide the best shopping environment for our customers and vendors — unfortunately, pets don’t fit into that model here.

When visiting our farmers markets, we ask that you please leave your pets at home, unless they are a service animal. For their safety, never leave your pet unattended or in a hot car while shopping at our markets.
